General information: 2011 Pound Issues
On 18 July 2011, South Sudan introduced its own banknotes, exchanging them at par for existing Sudanese pounds. The front of the South Sudan notes feature a portrait of rebel leader Dr.John Garang de Mabior, while the backs contain images of the countrys culture and wealth. The notes are signed by Elijah Malok as “Governor” even though he had not been officially appointed to the position.
The security features of these notes are virtually identical; only the windowed threads are different. On the 1 and 5 pound notes, the thread is thin and silver with demetalized BANK OF SOUTH SUDAN and the denomination. The other notes have a wider, gold-to-green color shifting thread with demetalized BSS and the denomination. Otherwise, the anti-counterfeiting features common to all denominations include intaglio printing, microtext, registration devices, novel serial numbers, opalescent stripes on back with repeated denominations, UV square with denomination, and watermark John Garang with electrotype denomination and Cornerstones.
