Banknotes of the Canadian dollar
When and why did Canada switch from paper money to plastic?
Beginning in 2011, the Bank of Canada introduced a new series of polymer banknotes.
The $100 note was issued on 14 November 2011; the $50 was issued on 26 March 2012; the $20 banknote was issued on 7 November 2012, and the $10 and $5 denominations were issued on 7 November 2013.
The new polymer notes allow for enhanced security features, such as the see-through window and holograms. This makes them harder to counterfeit than paper notes. Polymer is durable—it isn't damaged as easily as paper. A single polymer note lasts 2.5 times longer than a paper bank note, which means that it has less of an environmental impact than paper. It's also recyclable and allows for innovative security features such as windows, holograms and extremely detailed printing.
