On 29 March 2000, the Central Bank of Liberia introduced a new “unifed” currency, which was exchanged at par for “J. J.” notes and at a ratio of 1:2 for “Liberty” notes. The new banknotes each feature a portrait of a former president.
Curiously, the 50-dollar note depicts Samuel Doe, who staged a military coup détat on 12 April 1980, killing then president William Tolbert, Jr., who is depicted on the 100 dollar note.
Doe was himself tortured and killed in 1990 by forces fighting alongside Charles Taylor.
