In December 1991, the Bank of China building was built and soon became a new landmark in Macaus skyline. Te fronts of these notes feature scenic spots of Macau and the backs depict the bank headquarters as well as varied patterns of lotus flowers. Together with the lotus flower watermark, the design symbolizes Macaus nickname as “the land of lotus flower.” It also represents the stability, peace, growth, and prosperity of Macau.
On 18 January 1999, decree No. 1/99/M authorized the issuance of notes with new dates and signatures to commemorate the handover of Macau to China on 20 December 1999.
