1967 (1986) Fourth Series Issues
On 17 March 1986, the Central Bank issued a new set of four notes. This issue marked the appearance of the 2- and 20-lira denominations. The 1lira note was replaced by a coin in 1986.
For the first time the notes included a portrait of the head of state; in this case, Agatha Barbara, Malta’s third president. All of the notes feature a spiral motif from the renowned neolithic temple at
Tarxien. Each of the notes features one of four different sailing ships representative of Malta’s traditional shipbuilding history. The three largest denominations have horizontal lines at right front to assist the sight impaired.
On the back, the notes depict vignettes illustrating various activities of a traditional or commercial nature, as well as a symbolic monument and a building of outstanding architectural qualities.
Three panoramic views are also included, as is the emblem of the Republic. The words Bank Centrali ta’ Malta appear on both sides of the notes. Curiously, the bank’s name is in error as it should have a dot above the letter C in Ċentrali
