These notes were intaglio printed by Giesecke & Devrient in Munich, Germany, without imprint.
The notes have a new watermark of an elderly man’s bearded face (representative of a wise, old man), a solid security thread, and the same dimensions as the preceding issues, along with a new 500-ouguiya denomination.
The varieties’ years differ, but the date remains the same, as this commemorates Mauritania’s independence from France on 28 November 1960.
Beginning in 1989, the plain solid black security thread was replaced by a thread with printing and the colors of Mauritania’s flag: green and yellow.
