In October 1991, 17 printing firms were invited to provide designs for banknotes denominated in Namibian dollars. On the basis of quality, appearance, and quoted price, the Namibian cabinet awarded the contract to Tumba Bruk of Sweden. The Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) covered the total costs for the banknotes. The Namibia dollar was declared legal tender from 15 September 1993, at par with the South African rand, which remained legal tender in Namibia. All three denominations feature a portrait of Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi (who fought against German rule in Namibia in the early 1900s) and Parliament on the front with wildlife on the back.
