On 13 August 1990, Nicaragua re valued its currency at a rate of 5,000,000:1. - The official name of the Cordoba did not change, but the new currency was sometimes called the Cordoba oro. The last day to exchange the old currency was 30 April 1991. This series does not have a harmonious family design, perhaps because three different printers supplied the various denominations. The backs of most of these notes feature the coat of arms with rainbow, Phrygian cap, and five volcanoes, all in a triangle encircled by the words Republica De Nicaragua - America Central (Republic of Nicaragua - Central America). The rainbow at the top symbolizes peace; the cap is a symbol of freedom; the volcanoes represent the five Central American countries at the time of Nicaraguas independence in 1821 (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua); and the triangle symbolizes equality.
