On 15 September 2008, the Qatar Central Bank issued a new series of four notes 1, 5, 10, and 50 riyals which have symbols along the left front edge that facilitate their use by the sight impaired. New 100 and 500 riyal notes are in the works, but because these denominations were upgraded in 2007 with the addition of the 18-mm wide Optics security thread, bank officials did not feel the need to update them.
