Since 1874, the smallest banknote denomination issused by the Banco de España had traditionally been 25 pesetas, with smaller values reserved for coins, but these 5- and 10-peseta certificados 
de plata (silver certificates) dated 1935 were issued to alleviate a shortage of coins due to the Spanish Civil War. They were issued pursuant to decree of 3 October 1936

Se emitieron de conformidad con el decreto del 3 de octubre de 1936
