On 30 November 1967 the People’s Republic of South Yemen (PROSY), encompassing the former British colony and protectorate of Aden and the offshore islands of Perim, Kamaran and Socotra, which elected to join the new republic, was founded.1
The new constitution of November 1970 changed the Republic’s name to People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY).
The country has ill defined and in places disputed borders with the Yemen Arab Republic (north-west), Saudi Arabia (north) and Oman (north-east).
